Como iniciativa internacional, el Proyecto Humboldt Digital se enfrenta una y otra vez a desafíos logísticos. El objetivo es preservar e investigar el patrimonio cultural escrito de Cuba. Para ello, primero se digitalizan en la Habana importantes fuentes históricas, que luego se editan digitalmente tanto allí como en Berlín. Esto no solo requiere experiencia y software moderno, sino también mucho hardware.

From 20 to 24 July, Proyecto Humboldt Digital (ProHD) participated in the Digital Humanities 2020 conference, organized by the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO). The annual conference is aimed at digital humanities scholars and practitioners around the world. It was supposed to take place in Ottawa (Canada) this year, but was reorganized into a virtual event due to the coronavirus pandemic. The themes of the conference were public digital humanities, the open data movement and the field of First Nations, Native American and Indigenous Studies.

Alexander von Humboldts Reisen nach Kuba und sein Dialog mit der intellektuellen und politischen Elite seiner Zeit wurden schon vielfach untersucht. Viele Dokumente, die für die Erforschung von Humboldts Aufenthalten in Kuba eine wichtige Rolle spielen, werden jedoch unter schlechten Bedingungen aufbewahrt und sind für Forscher*innen oft nur schwer zugänglich. Proyecto Humboldt Digital (ProHD) hat sich daher zur Aufgabe gemacht, eine Auswahl wichtiger Dokumente zu digitalisieren und als Open Access-Publikation zu veröffentlichen. Auf diese Weise können die Dokumente online gesucht, abgerufen und heruntergeladen werden. Digitale Kopien haben außerdem den Vorteil, dass der direkte Kontakt mit den Originaldokumenten verringert wird.

Preservar y dar acceso
Aunque el viaje de Alexander von Humboldt a Cuba y el diálogo entablado con la élite intelectual y política de la época han sido dos temas estudiados anteriormente, muchos documentos relevantes para conocer la huella de Humboldt en Cuba y la huella que Cuba dejó en la obra de Humboldt se custodian en condiciones de conservación inestables y a menudo no son fácilmente accesibles para los investigadores. Proyecto Humboldt Digital (ProHD) pretende dar solución a este problema mediante la selección, digitalización y publicación en abierto en tanto que las copias digitales disminuyen el contacto directo con los documentos originales y los usuarios podrán buscar, recuperar y descargarlas en línea.
